Tech Stack

Sometimes knowing a little too much can be a problem. I was tech working back in the late 90s. I was very good at the time, and like anyone, I got rusty over time. I like to have project to keep my skills sharp.

I also like the idea of having my own domain, gregdyche.com. I’m not sure it’s required. I just like having it.

I started out with wordpress.com years ago, and I didn’t like the restrictions. It was easy to use, but I couldn’t get some tools added.

I moved to Hostgater for a couple of years. I was okay, but it seemed like I needed all these other expenses, like SSL or backups. I was spending a few hundred per year, and I wasn’t doing anything special.

I moved to godaddy, and I paid for cpanel admin tool, so I could add other software. I had dreams to creating a database and working on some Linux. I never did. And again it was costing me a lot of money. Somehow the site allowed me to double purchase a SSL certificate, and I could never figure it out with their helpdesk. I just kept paying for things I didn’t need.

I stumbled upon https://sive.rs/ti. Derek Sivers seems like a great guy. I only know him through podcasts and a book of his. He has the notes published to be tech independent. I thought it was a great idea. I left godaddy, and went from paying about 300/year to paying about 100/year. Plus, I was having more fun.

Mr. Sivers’ plan was working, but it took more time and attention than I wanted to spend. I teach full time, and I work side-gigs. I just want a simple web page where I can post some writings.

I’m a big fan of Matt Mullenweg. He seems like someone I can trust, so guess what? I’m back to wordpress.com. I have a simple web page, and it cost me 35/year - so far. I might upgrade later to get some features. We’ll see.
